The Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection: New York Fashion Week 2011

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents The Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection: New York Fashion Week 2011.

Last night's Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection fashion show was a rousing kick off to New York Fashion Week Fall 2011 at Lincoln Center. Celebrities like Dita Von Teese, Cat Deeley and Camila Alves walked the runway in designer red dresses to help raise awareness of heart disease as the #1 killer of American women.

Other participants in this year's show included Ann Curry in Carmen Marc Valvo, Audrina Patridge in Badgley Mischka, Dania Ramirez in Catherine Malandrino, Eva Amurri in Chris Benz, Garcelle Beauvais in Monique Lhuillier, Giuliana Rancic in Notte by Marchesa, Julianne Hough in Swarovski, and Katrina Bowden in Oscar de la Renta, among others. A very pregnant Laila Ali walked in A Pea in the Pod, while Linda Gray in Pamella Roland, Patti LaBelle in Zang Toi, and Suzanne Somers in Ina Soltani all looked radiant.

Natasha Bedingfield in Reem Acra closed the show, performing her song "Strip Me" accompanied only by a guitar.

Walking the red carpet to support partner Camila Alves was Matthew McConaughey, while Susan Sarandon cheered on daughter Eva Amurri, and Bill Rancic accompanied wife Giuliana. Lisa Rinna, Kat DeLuna, Nigel Barker, Miss J Alexander, Jay Manuel, Johnny Weir, Countess Luann deLesseps, Carson Kressley, Mary Amons, and Sonja Morgan were also in attendance.

Love the dresses? For the third consecutive year, The Heart Truth, in partnership with Clothes Off Our Back, will auction a selection of designer dresses worn by celebrities in the fashion show. Proceeds will benefit the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health and will be used to further efforts related to women’s heart health awareness and research.

Celebs Get a Jump on Spring Trends

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Celebs Get a Jump on Spring Trends.

As The Fashion Spot recently reported, Spring 2011 runway trends include pajama pants, below-the-knee skirts, and the return of the bell bottom. Celebrities seem to be paying attention, as they've been getting a jump on these spring trends.

M.I.A. was spotted in these acid wash pajama pants at Sydney International Airport, while Whitney Port wore her own high-waisted, tye-dyed pair in Beverly Hills.

English model Lisa Snowdon wore this below-the-knee dress on the set of a recent Marks & Spencer photo shoot in Miami, and Elen Rivas wore this long tartan skirt with pink lace-up booties.

Kim Kardashian has embraced the 70s trend in this flowery top, knitted vest, and baby blue bell bottom jeans that eclipse her feet. Kristin Cavallari, former star of The Hills, stepped out in a slimmer flare.

If celebs are already embracing these trends, it's likely they are here to stay!

Camila Alves Talks Muxo Handbags

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Camila Alves Talks Muxo Handbags.

Long before Camila Alves ever set foot on a red carpet, or had paparazzi on her heels, the former Shear Genius host was a model. It was only a matter of time before Alves followed in the footsteps of model greats Cindy Crawford and Heidi Klum, transforming into a fashion forward mother and designer. Muxo, Alves' handbag line, was created alongside her mother, and draws inspiration from her travels across the globe, pairing soft leathers in a subtle and striking color palette.

theFashionSpot: The colors are just incredible. Soft blushes, muted purple...

Camila Alves: I was a little bit like "oh, purple." It's fun but it's not over the top.

tFS: These bags are great accents to complete an outfit! Just the right amount of flare.
CA: That's the whole point of the bag. You don't need to have a thousand accessories; if you have your outfit, it can be as simple as jeans and a t-shirt, or it can be very sophisticated. You put on the handbag and it will close the outfit.

tFS: Is it hard to design for such a large audience?

CA: One thing that I really wanted to keep, was that sometimes when you go to do things for the masses, the quality of the leather – of the product – doesn't stay the same, and we really worked hard to have the leather be as good, to have a great touch. The handbags are light, we use a linen lining, it's very sophisticated and clean. We have a great product.  I'm excited about it!

tFS: What's it like designing with your mom?

CA: We work together, we do everything together. My mom is the one who went to school for that so she has about three design degrees. She went to three different schools for it, she's like the expert, she can do everything from beginning to end. All the stages. I learn a lot with her. We do everything together, I'll do a trip and I'll tell her the colors that I saw or the things that I saw and then she'll come up with an idea. I'm really good with closing the product. We balance it off of each other, we do everything together, in terms of creating the handbag. It's fun and it's great, but it's also very tricky.

tFS: Do you ever butt heads when designing?

CA: Yeah, we work great together, but of course, we do butt heads. We're mother and daughter, that's gotta happen.

tFS: We love seeing your glamorous looks on the red carpet. Did any celebrities influence this line?

CA: No, because the line doesn't come from anybody. It doesn't come from me or from my mother or an actress or an actor. It doesn't come from that. The line comes from places that I've been, it's a lot of inspiration from nature. A lot of colors are earth tones, darts, and the stitching. A lot of the stuff is mostly inspired by trips. Brazil, New York, Grand Canyon. I don't really follow what trend is out there, what people are doing. We basically go on what we like and what we saw, and think we should share with people. We put it out there.

Muxo handbags are available at mymuxo.com.

Get the Look: Sustainable Spring

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Get the Look: Sustainable Spring.

Setting a new standard for sustainable fashion, H&M introduces its eco-sensible collection just in time for spring. The brilliant lineup, composed of a variety of earth-friendly materials, is an ode to understated-meets-playful chic. Low-key separates in soft neutrals mingle with energetic pops of color, and unexpected prints add a witty touch to ladylike cuts.

On their own, they would be downright mesmerizing – but the beauty is also in the details. All garments and accessories are made with certified organic cotton, which reduces the impact on the environment and preserves the planet's valuable natural resources. The eco-conscious material is grown without chemicals and artificial fertilizers, and is just as soft and comforting to the touch as traditional cotton. The company also utilizes recycled polyester, which is created with PET bottles and textile remnants, as well as Tencel® and recycled wool.

In using these natural materials, the company hopes to draw even greater attention to its commitment to sustainable style. Its ultimate hope is that all of the cotton used in its products will be sustainably sourced by the year 2020. As they work toward this goal, H&M continues its involvement with the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), which promotes the improvement of cotton cultivation and its impact on society and the environment.

This collection channels a "less is more" philosophy with its luxurious pieces, which are at once minimal and feminine, buoyant and ladylike, charming and ethereal. The mixed bag offers something for everyone this season, when everything is about fanciful, sophisticated fun. A flirty floral dress ($34.95) is beguiling with frill trim and a flattering elasticized waist, while a tiered chiffon dress ($19.95) composed of recycled polyester exudes an incredibly glam, sassy-chic vibe.

The polished end of the spectrum offers clear proof that the menswear trend is still very much relevant. A borrowed-from-his-closet double-breasted blazer ($34.95) in navy spells perfection over everything from the season's wide leg jeans to a playful skirt. Speaking of, the organic cotton heart-etched skirt ($24.95) is quirky style at its very best. Work more upbeat prints into your warm weather wardrobe with a darling floral top ($29.95), complete with a self-tie belt at the waist.

Of course, nothing is complete without accessories. A floral scarf ($6.95) adds a shot of color to a subdued palette. A wrist stacked with adorable heart-shaped bangles ($5.95) gives new meaning to "arm candy." An imitation suede heel ($34.95) looks dynamic with the season's prettiest dresses and channels a hint of 1970s glamour courtesy of its faux wood heel.

Going organic has never been so fun!

Spring 2011 Trend: the 70s Are Back!

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Spring 2011 Trend: the 70s Are Back!

You've heard it from Rachel Zoe, and now it has been confirmed – the 70s are back! Not the denim shorts and beaded headbands, but the Halston and Yves Saint Laurent 70s fashion that was all about super luxurious fabrics, decadent prints and silks, and above all else, glamour. Etro is reintroducing flared pants, we're seeing jumpsuits and lamé at Marc Jacobs, and magazines and celebrities are putting their spin on all sorts of 70s-inspired outfits.

Georgia May Jagger's latest spread in British Vogue's January issue (above) shows her wearing big floppy hats, crochet swimsuits, and high-waisted boots and shorts. Kate Hudson has always sported a Los Angeles 70s luxe vibe, with floaty sundresses, luxurious white pantsuits, and fishtail gowns on the red carpet. Nicole Richie, Rachel Zoe, and Kristen Bell can't wear enough huge sunglasses, faux fur vests, and beautiful prints that evoke the bohemian glamour we all think of when we read or hear about the era – it's all about cocktails by the pool and dancing after sunset in these outfits.

Here are some celebrity and street style looks that evoke the 70s-inspired trend perfectly.

Flared jeans, oversized sunglasses, and a silk shirt ooze relaxed 70s glamour in this casual daywear look (above, left). The high-waisted shorts, fedora hat, and sequined cardigan look (above, right) is the perfect mix of bohemian glamour that we love about the 70s trend.

Kristen Bell wears a white cape and floppy hat for a 70s-inspired outfit.

The 70's also celebrated wider shapes, like maxi skirts and capes. Kristen Bell's white cape and floppy hat showcase some of the more memorable 70s trends. Her red lipstick adds the perfect touch of glamour!

Nicole Richie has perfected the 70s look, and always in a modern and refreshing way. This mulberry velvet pays homage to the trend, and the elegant draped sleeve adds 70s luxury to an otherwise regular mini dress.  She may be in black, which we'll admit doesn't seem too fitting for the print-crazy 70s vibe, but the elegance of long sleeves with a deep plunging neckline and a strong diamante detail at the bodice is very luxurious and flattering on Amy Adams. Paired with some knee-high boots, this is a look that even Anita Pallenberg could pull off.

Prada Gets Vibrant for Spring

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Prada Gets Vibrant for Spring .

Prada SS11 is quite unordinary compared to the season’s trend of all-white show openers.

Prada surprises us with bright orange, hot pink, lime green and fluorescent yellow (setting the tone for the new big trend of neon color!). Also, while many designers have looked to the ’70s for spring 2011, Prada’s color palette was the only thing remotely ’70s-inspired. The collection reminded us of Mexico, Brazil and maybe even Puerto Rico because of its form-fitting dresses with drop-waist ruffles that were simply to die for! We also love the oversized striped sombreros. We are thrilled that we finally have a spring collection that is just so much fun and that being said: It’s hard to pin this collection to any distinct decade because it was so modern and bright and forward-thinking.

Christian Dior Spring Couture Collection 2011

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Christian Dior Spring Couture Collection 2011.

John Galliano gave haute couture a breath of fresh air with the debut of Christian Dior Spring Couture Collection 2011.

Galliano brought the new "it" factor, 3D, to his clothes in a remarkable way. Channeling the artistry of acclaimed fashion illustrator, Rene Gruau, Galliano found a way to make all of his garments pop on the runway. Each piece mirroring the fashion illustration from which it was inspired. He added shadows by layering tulle and created lines in his garments that were a reflection of an illustrator’s pen. He used colors rich and bold that blended into one another to provide depth and texture. How he envisioned this masterpiece was astounding. He enhanced the silhouettes and exaggerated the pieces to be walking images of illustrations.

H&M is launching a plus size collection that’s only available online exclusively in Europe.
The 20-piece collection includes skirts, cardigans, tops and lingerie in a 50s style theme. The one-shot one-collection will be available online at the beginning of March. The sizes are expected to run 8-24. The only problem here is that H&M online is only available to customers in Austria, Denmark, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Norway and Sweden. Abu Dhabi’s Galleria at Sowwah Square

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Abu Dhabi’s Galleria at Sowwah Square.

A shopping, dining and entertainment complex has been created in Abu Dhabi.

Gulf Related, a joint venture of Related Companies and Gulf Capital, along with Marvin Traub, the international retail consultant, are the masterminds behind what is now called The Galleria at Sowwah Square. Sowwah Square is a 5-million-square-foot-mixed-use project by Mubadala Development Co. that has been under construction for the past three years. Now The Galleria, 225,000 sq. ft. of retail space and 125,000 sq. ft. of restaurants, will be a major element of the area. Sowwah Square will also open Rosewood and Four Seasons hotels during fall 2012 and spring 2013. The architect for The Galleria is Elkus-Manfredi, who will build a waterfront level that’ll contain 50 luxury retailers.

Valentino Couture Spring 2011

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Valentino Couture Spring 2011 .

Valentino’s Couture spring 2011 collection has his name written all over it.

Seems as if creative directors Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiur plan for pure elegance worked. The collection, filled with nude dresses is chic, sophisticated and absolutely gorgeous. There are a few fire red pieces just to give a little spice, but they’re still complementary to the style of elegance. The collection is mostly dresses of maxi length and knee length, but there are a few pieces that are maxi length and knee length skirts matched with tops. There are also a few jackets that can be worn as dresses and are as stylish as the dresses themselves. The creative directors switched up the pieces towards the end with a lovely floral print. -Damonica Boone

Spring 2011 Trend: Trench Coats

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Spring 2011 Trend: Trench Coats.

Flouncey skirts and floral prints may be hard to think about in the dead of winter, but one spring trend we can get behind right now? The trench coat. The Burberry and Aquascutum classic trench coats may never go out of style, but designers, including Burberry creative director Christopher Bailey, are putting their own spin on the timeless silhouette (right). From leather, high-shine, or denim looks, to mixed texture, embroidered or widely belted ones, the options for Spring 2011 run the gamut, allowing us to easily express our personal style via this versatile outerwear style.

While east coasters may have to hold off on this trend for at least another month, west coasters are smack in the middle of the rainy season, and the trench (which was, after all, developed as a lightweight alternative to the heavy coats worn by British and French soldiers during World War I) is the perfect splurge-worthy item of the season.

To work more than one trend into this look, opt for a denim trench like one from Derek Lam, or a white or ivory one like those seen on the Yves Saint Laurent Spring 2011 runway.

Spring 2011 Trend: 1970s Fashion

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Spring 2011 Trend: 1970s Fashion.

The sexy simplicity of 1970s style never goes out of fashion. Those neckline baring jumpsuits, silver and gold lame halter dresses, and playful hot pants evoked a liberating time in fashion where women could wear clothes that were less constricting than those of the 1960s.

Oversized sunglasses and wide leg pants never went out of style, but they are an even bigger trend for Spring 2011. An easy skirt and loosely fitted sweater at Fendi along with a fitted pant suit by Etro are glimpses of what we can expect from 70s-inspired designer collections. For the more fashion adventurous, try a pair of metallic hot pants and matching top as seen at Elie Tahari.

Spring 2011 Trend: Pajama Pants

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Spring 2011 Trend: Pajama Pants.

Either designers are extremely tired and dreaming of sleep, or they're really becoming workaholics and don’t have time to change from their sleepwear to daywear. Pajama pants made a huge splash on the runways for Spring 2011. Styles include matching printed tops for a pajama look from head-to-toe, and more wearable options such as the slouchy white pant from Michael Kors. These styles look incredibly comfortable but may take a little courage to actually wear them out in the real world. Check out the runway looks below for ideas on how to incorporate the right style into your wardrobe next season.

Quick guide to Paris during Couture

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Quick guide to Paris during Couture.

With the couture shows well and truly underway and Paris at it’s flamboyant best, here’s five ways to make the most of the city of lights.

1. Take time for tea at Laudurée’s exquisite tea salon at 16 rue Royale. After witnessing whippet-thin models stalk down the runway you might not feel like indulging in bitter chocolate, pistachio or orange blossom macaroons (just try to resist), but it is the perfect prelude to a turn about the tuileries.

2. Brush up on recent fashion history at Les Arts Decoratifs (the museum of decorative arts, just a skip away from le Louvre). Les années 1990-2000 spans a pivotal and at times radical ten years in the industry with the exhibition featuring 150 designs selected from icons like Martin Margiela, Issey Miyake and Alexander McQueen.

3. Take a stroll down rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré past YSL, Givenchy, Hermes, Lanvin, and Prada, then take a left onto rue Cambon and make your way to number 31 where Chanel’s flagship store awaits. If there’s still time, duck to Colette store for the latest, coolest, most covetable everything.

4. Hotel Costes is the place to dine for the people watching alone. With its sumptuous interior and super-chic clientele it’s possible you might have trouble focusing on the menu (don’t miss dish: le tigre qui pleure). But be warned, reservations are taken on the day and they’re as hard to obtain as a ringside seat at the shows.

5. Join the long list of fabulously famous patrons to have graced the opulent surrounds of The Ritz Paris. Perch on the plush banquettes of Bar Vendôme sipping Champagne and channelling the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Ernest Hemingway, and the inimitable Coco Chanel.

Designer Bio: Prabal Gurung

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Designer Bio: Prabal Gurung.

As one of this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists, Prabal Gurung has a fresh, modern, and superbly unique vision as a fashion designer. Gurung showed a sexy yet alluringly subtle collection at Spring 2011 New York Fashion Week, impressing the fashion industry as a new designer to watch. It wasn’t until Fall 2010 that he first showed his designs at Bryant Park. Gurung derives his inspirations from all around the world, and then he transforms his stimuli into three-dimensional wearable works of art.

Gurung was born in Singapore and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal. He first became interested in fashion in New Delhi, India, where he studied at the National Institute of Fashion Technology. From there, Gurung traveled to places like Melbourne and London, where he worked with stylists and designers on fashion shows and international publications. After years of traveling, Gurung moved to New York City in 1999, where he became an intern at Donna Karan and a student at Parsons School of Design. After his Parsons education, Gurung worked for two years at Cynthia Rowley on the design team. These experiences brought him to Bill Blass, where he worked as Design Director for five years. This is when Gurung decided to go on his own and launch his line, the self-titled, PRABAL GURUNG.

Since launching his own line, Gurung has dressed many celebrated women of today, including First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Demi Moore, and Zoe Saldana, just to list a few. He was the recipient of the 2010 Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award, as well as a nominee for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Swarovski Womenswear Award, and continued to become a finalist. His vision for womenswear seems to be what the world of fashion desperately needs, and the industry’s leading style icons covet his pieces. His collections are sold all over the world, as well as online.

“We’ve had a decade of tight skirts and vulgar dresses, and I wanted to make a statement about something different,” said Gurung. The industry is waiting with high hopes to see what Gurung’s point of view will bring to the world of fashion in the future.

Cashmere: How to Wear and Care For It

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Cashmere: How to Wear and Care For It.

Cashmere sweaters, from left, by Jason Wu for TSE, Eileen Fisher and Donna Karan.

Cashmere sweaters are classic, elegant and oh so soft. Coco Chanel must have been thinking of cashmere when she said, "Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury."

And with winter's arctic blasts upon us, now is the time to tap into that luxury.

Mimi Wong, a sweater knit designer at Eileen Fisher, says the rich fabric remains a classic because of its lofty feel, superior quality and light weight, plus insulating abilities.

"It is seasonless and belongs in every wardrobe," she tells StyleList. "What's great about cashmere is that you can dress it up or down. Pair it with jeans and you can go play or work. Party (by pairing it) with shiny pants or skirts."

Fashion expert George Kotsiopoulos, co-host of E!'s "Fashion Police With Joan Rivers," agrees that the fabric works in all kinds of weather.

"While cashmere may not be as warm as wool, a lightweight cashmere cardigan is versatile enough to keep you cozy in winter, but will not stifle you on a chilly summer night," he tells StyleList.

We asked our experts -- Wong, Kotsiopoulos and Lindsey Wieber Boyd, co-founder of the Laundress line of specialty detergents -- for the latest on cashmere style, selection and care.

We're feeling luxurious already.

Selection: "The touch test is the best way to tell the quality," Kotsiopoulos says. "Simply run your hand over the sweater and if you see lots of fuzzies or pills, then your sweater is made of low-quality cashmere. But even if it's the softest thing you've ever felt, move on to the label. Of course, 100 percent cashmere is the best, but cashmere-silk blends are also acceptable, provided the price is right since cashmere blends should cost less."

Color: "The natural, undyed colors of the cashmere itself is always exquisite and the metal-gray shades are beautiful," Wong says. "Both colors have longevity usage."

Shape: "Simple, slouchy, iconic boyfriend cardigans, modern tunics, oval cardigans, slouchy, long easy tops, tiny cropped cardigans..." says Wong, who is clearly a devotee.

Price: "Just because it's cheap does not mean it's low quality," Kotsiopoulos says. "Large retailers can make great sweaters simply because they buy quality cashmere yarns in bulk and pass that savings to the consumer. Always look at the label, and if it's mostly wool, then it should be supercheap."

Accessorize: "The yarn is so versatile, it can be knit into luxe wraps, ponchos, hats, scarves, gloves, throws -- and I haven't even mentioned the interesting stitches, textures and sparkles that can be turn these accessories into necessities," Wong says.

Care: "You can put cashmere into the machine, but the best way to wash cashmere or wool or blends is by hand-washing and laying flat to dry," Wieber Boyd tells StyleList. We asked her to walk us through the cashmere-cleaning process.

1. Treat stains with a prewash solution. "The first thing you want to do is check your sweater for any visible stains before you wash it. We recommend checking the outside and then turning the sweater inside out, because a lot of times there are stains on the underarms and around the collar and cuffs."

2. Remove any pills. "We use our sweater stone, but you can use a sweater comb as well. Just rub the sweater in one direction, as you would with a lint brush, and this will pick up the little nubby pills. Pilling is really natural -- it doesn't happen from washing, which a lot of people think -- it happens from wearing. It's friction that occurs typically under the arms or the back side of the sweater, from sitting down or in your car or from your handbag, things like that."

3. Hand-wash. Add a few squirts of wool-and-cashmere shampoo to a wash basin or sink filled with cold or tepid water. "It's really important that you use the right product in order to preserve the natural oils of the yarn. Let it sit for up to an hour -- it doesn't hurt it if you forget about it. Once you soak it, rinse out the excess water and soap with cold water and press it against the basin or the sink. You never want to wring the sweater because it will distort it."

4. Air-dry. Place the sweater flat on a towel to remove more water if necessary, and lay it flat to dry on a drying rack or a clean towel. "We recommend a drying rack because there's air that comes from below and above, so it dries faster." Let dry overnight, and if it's wrinkled, steam it. "Never iron it, never use the dryer. I use a steamer for almost everything, and it's really great for cashmere."

5. Don't hang it up. The number one error people make when it comes to cashmere care is hanging their sweaters. "If you put it on a hanger, especially when it's wet, your sweater will actually get bigger versus shrinking. It's really important to lay it flat. Even when you're storing your sweaters, you don't hang them. Hangers also leave shoulder marks."

Women tips 2011: Best 10 style tips to look thin

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Women tips 2011: Best 10 style tips to look thin.

Women tips 2011: Best 10 style tips to look thin: Wardrobe stylist and set designer Kami Gray gives you 10 easy ways to look thin in your clothes.

Since I dress people for a living, it would seem a shame not to pass along some surefire ways for instantly looking five pounds thinner. (These are mostly for women, but men can benefit from many of them as well.)

1. Wear clothes that fit you. Your tops, bottoms, and undergarments should not be too small or too large. Oversized clothing adds weight and makes you look like you’re trying to hide in your clothes. Undersized clothing squeezes the top layer of subcutaneous fat (which we all have to some extent) and creates a muffin top, fatback, and peek-a-boo breasts. A good bra that provides proper coverage is essential to tops and blouses fitting correctly.

2. Wear dark colors on bottom, light colors on top. White and light colors add weight, and dark colors subtract weight. For most people, the bottom half is larger, so to create the illusion of it being less pronounced, wear dark jeans, pants, skirts, and shorts and pair them with lighter tops.

3. Layer on top. It’s hard to get away with much when wearing a single layer on top – every little bump shows. Pair lightweight tops, blouses, polos, tanks and tees with cardigans, blazers, hoodies, or a second T-shirt. Make sure that whatever top(s) you wear covers the midriff when you reach for something or blow-dry your hair. A long, completely opaque camisole or tank top worn tucked or untucked can be layered under almost everything.

4. Add some height. Routinely wearing high heels can wreak havoc on your back and posture, but occasionally a little boost to your height can create a dramatic difference. Someone 5’6″ and 145 pounds looks 5’10″ and the exact weight when wearing a pair of four inch boots or heels. Make sure your pant hem almost reaches the floor to create the longest legs possible.

5. Forgo embellishments. Ribbons, bows, jewels, and other adornments dangling from your clothes add bulk and make people around you dizzy. Simple, classic, solid fabrics create the most slimming look.

6. Do denim right. Jeans should not be too short – they should almost reach the floor. Make sure your jeans have back pockets; pocket-free jeans don’t look good on any body type. If you have a muffin top (that is, more fat around your midriff), get a larger size or choose a different brand or style. Jeans that come up too high on the waist create the appearance of a long behind. Bootcut jeans have by far the most flattering hem type; narrow hems are for skinny, trendy, young people. Also, the darker the denim, the more flattering, and no pleats in front!

7. Use self-tanner or bronzer for pale legs. If you weren’t blessed with naturally tan or dark skin, adding a bit of color to your legs when wearing shorts, skirts, or dresses works like magic to slim and even tone your legs. Bronzer also hides spider veins and other unsightly blemishes. However, it smells horrible, so apply it at night and rinse it off in the morning. Try Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Liquid Bronzer.

8. Make sure your sleeves and straps fit. The sleeve opening should fit around the circumference of your arm and not be too tight. For tank tops, make sure the straps are loose enough that extra skin is not oozing on either side of them. Sleeve lengths that cover down to the elbow look the most flattering.

9. Choose the right shoes. Wear shoes that create a low contrast with what you’re wearing on the bottom. For example, pairing black shoes with black pants, tan shoes with bare legs, or brown or rust shoes or boots with denim will create a more flattering, lengthy, cohesive appearance than wearing a pair of bright red pumps with your jeans.

10. Wear black. Nothing does the trick better than black. So you don’t look funeral bound, wear a colorful scarf around your neck or some fun but tasteful jewelry.
